Textile & Handloom Exercise 1.4.35
Shawl Weaving Artisan - Defects and Yarn Quality
Analyze yarn quality requirement for warp and weft
Objectives : At the end of this exercise you shall be able to
• analyze count, twist and crimp in the fabric
• identify various yarn defects and remedial measures
• analyze and reduce the cause of end breakages in the loom.
Requirements
Tools/Equipment’s/Instruments
• Different Fabric sample - as reqd. • Pick glass - 1 No.
• Yarn sample - as reqd. • Measuring tape - 1 No.
PROCEDURE
TASK 1: Calculate fabric count
1 Take 50cm x 50cm fabric.
Fig 2
2 Mark the warp direction and weft direction by using
pen.
3 Take the pick glass and open it as shown in Fig 1
Fig 1
5 Observe the threads through the pick glass.
6 Count the threads between the slots in the pick
glass.
7 After counting the threads move the counting glass
to other place of the fabric and start the counting
4 Now place the pick glass on the fabric as shown in process.
Fig 2.
8 Likewise take ten readings and find the average.
TASK 2: Calculate number of picks per inch in the fabric
Table 1
1 Follow the procedure mentioned in Task 1.
2 Now calculate the ends per inch and picks per inch. S.No. Ends per inch Picksper Yarn count
e.g. EPI X PPI = count of yarn. inch
